The Program on Africa examines the key challenges facing the region, both from historical and modern perspectives.
The African continent has a faced a deep history of imperialism, exploitation, and struggle. In the latter part of the 20th century, however, the region saw a transformation never seen on such a large scale. 60 nations gained independence from their colonizers.
Yet, the road since independence has been uneasy, seeing numerous outbreaks of violence, coups, despotism, and ethnic/religious conflict. The Program aims at better understanding the process of democratization and how negative foreign intervention, as well as united global efforts have played into effect in Africa.
